Budget allocation for National Product Safety Framework

Predictably, following the budget release, Assistant Treasurer Chris Bowen MP issued a long series of press released; the first was  ‘Next Step Toward a National Product Safety Framework‘.

In this release, he notes that the budget allocates $24.8 million over five years to the ACCC to implement and administer the new national consumer product safety framework.  COAG agreed, in July 2008, to ‘create a single national product safety law with joint and consistent enforcement by Commonwealth and State and Territory regulators’ with the ACCC responsible for leading the enforcement.

The new national product safety framework will be in operation by the end of 2010.
